Teaching secondary school kids
Before I proceed, I just want to say to all the teachers out there that…”you guys are unbelievable!!!”
The ‘teachers’ here does not include lecturers in this context.
I had an ‘opportunity’ to conduct a 3D workshop for the secondary school kids last week. Despite my busy schedule and mounting workload, I took a precious 4 hours off to conduct this workshop.
Before I start my lesson, I told myself that these students were different from my students, that I should manage my expectation before teaching them about 3D and the software.
Their teacher was a sweet lady. We chatted for awhile while waiting for the kids to settle down.
Right after the kids were seated, she transformed into a stern cold person and started warning them. I couldn’t believe the next few sentences that she said to the class!
“I DO NOT want to see LEGS on the table. AND I CERTAINLY DO NOT WANT to see something something on the chair.” I can’t remember the something something because I was already in shock.
“I DO NOT want to hear phone ringing so TURN IT TO SILENT MODE!”
After a short silence, she turned to me, smiled sweetly and nodded to me. 0_0 Wow..fierce! She sure changed very fast.
Before I start saying anything, she turned back again, smiled sweetly and said:” If anyone of them wants to go to the toilet, don’t let them go in pair. They must go ALONE.”
*gulp* I swore my expression was priceless when I heard that. Because the other teacher joked to her that she was scaring me. She sure was.
Suddenly I did not know what kind of students danger situation I was getting myself into.
*still in shock* I turned to the class and smiled sweetly, “Good morning and welcome to xxx. Today…”
Then I realised, even I could ‘change’ as fast as she did.
For your information, these were 16 years old kids. Frankly, I do not remember my teacher saying those things to us. May be time has changed. Kids now are very different. But again, my generation is not very FAR from theirs, isn’t it?
The class went well though the majority had no interest in 3D at all. They said they were “dragged” by their teachers here. HAH!
But really, I can’t imagine how patient these teachers are. I am not sure how it is like to teach the secondary and primary school kids but one thing I am sure is, it AIN’T easy! Especially if you have a bunch of mischievous students who always want to test their boundaries. -_-

Found my year 12 school magazine the other day and saw this picture..
It was taken at the AQUA day and this picture was featured in the school magazine.
Gosh, look at the ‘art’ on my face! What was I thinking man..

Despite your generation not being too far from theirs, times have changed a lot faster than you think – kids nowadays are way more spoiled and rebellious than before.
If the teacher isn’t firm and stern, the students are fully capable of insubordination, knowing that the teacher is a nice and “vulnerable” target.
Nope, I do not speak from experience – I’m not “teacher” material, as you can tell by being your student. =P

Yes the kids today are pretty spoiled. Throw them in some tough (but not impossible) obstacle course, and they start to chicken out. Easily. It’s pretty ridiculous sometimes. [/rant]
And Ms Cherry, from what you described above? I really really REALLY thought it would only happen in primary school. D=

When I was secondary three, I remembered my MT teacher yelling “keep quiet” for a record of 46 times in my class. I wasn’t one of the perpetrators, though.

Farhan:exactly! That was what i thought too. I thought only primary students behave like this.
KS: Of course. I can’t imagine if you are the one who make noise. (it’s a compliment!)
