Are sisters lifetime competitors?
“I think his brother is more friendly..” I overheard my neighbours’ conversation when I was on my way to meet my client. Then it reminded me of how people like to compare my sister and I in EVERYTHING! Luckily, my sister and I are so close that we just ignore whatever people commented on us and we accept what and who we are.
My sister and I had a great discussion the other day. Apparently, she heard what our neighbours said too. She then told me that she used to have pressure at school because teachers expected a lot from her. She and I were very active at school. We participated in most of the competitions ranging from debating to tennis. Sometimes, her teacher would say something like this:”If your sister can do it, why can’t you?” and she was very upset and stressed out. However, we both learned that each of us is good at different things and it is like comparing an apple and an orange. Our neighbours especially, like to comment that I am more reserved and quiet while my sister is more outgoing. Hahaha!
Why did I say sisters are lifetime competitors? When we sent my sister off at the airport, we met a lady carrying her grandchild. She looked young and did not look like a grandma to us. Then we complimented her that she looked very young and surprisingly, she told us that her older sister looked even younger. We really didn’t expect to hear that from her. Mm…
You see. From what I observed from other families, they tend to compare their daughters since they were born. First, whose eyes are bigger? And who is the faster learner? Then when they are studying, they will compare which one is brighter, more hardworking, smarter, taller and fatter. Later on, they will compare whose boy friend is better, richer and more caring. After they get married, they will compare their kids, who is cuter, whose husband has a better career or richer. Blablabla….and the list goes on to whose house and car is bigger.
Sometimes I just don’t get it why people would compare sisters and brothers. Probably we are so used to comparing that we didn’t even realize when we do so. I think when sisters start to compete is when people started to comment and compare. Otherwise, who cares who is better? The worst thing that can ever happen to sisters is when people thought the younger one is the elder one. Hahaha…
