What are the odds of having a SUN and a SHINE in the SAME CLASS?

I have a student called SHINE with the surname of SUN and another called SUN. And really, they never stop bringing sunshine to my class.

Each time I call up either of their names, my brain will automatically hum:”You’re my sun-shine, my only sun-shine..you make me happy, when sky is grey…” It never fails to bring a sunshine smile to my face.

However, during my class yesterday, my brain suddenly decided to “sing out loud” as I was returning Shine his assignment. I was totally oblivious to it as I sang: “You’re my sunshine, my only sunshine..” until Shine asked with a shocking look:“Cher, what’s with the song??”

Is it strange that I don’t feel it coming?

I have not bought new clothes and shoes…and am not even sure if I want to buy them actually.

I don’ think I want to do spring cleaning.

Sean kindly put it, “It has to do with age. When you were young, YOU WANT EVERYTHING NEW. But…strange, I only started like this when I was 32.”

Great….Another reminder of +1..

Remember this entry exactly 1 year ago?

I had trouble sleeping for weeks. Those herbal pills and doctor’s drowsy pills didn’t work. I was so bothered until Sean had to make an appointment with NUH Sleep Laboratory.

I didn’t go though, knowing that I have to go for an overnight polysomnography kinda freaked me out. The idea of having wires and channels hooked on my head and body and with a bunch of people constantly observing me sleeping in a cold white bed just wouldn’t help me to sleep.

So…how to monitor if I can’t even sleep? -_-

Anyway, I called up a friend of mine who worked as a pharmacist back in Penang. He said:”NO sleeping pills!” He advised me to take calcium and magnesium pills instead.

I was skeptical for the first 5 minutes. Then I remembered what I studied about calcium and neurotransmission back in college. Calcium helps to get the brain to produce melatonin faster. And melatonin helps to slows down the “traffic” in the nerves and hence, the brain could rest.

It is commonly known that drinking warm milk helps to sleep. Not because it is warm but milk contains tryptophan and calcium, which gives the same effect too.

So, when I know my brain is super active even 2 hours before going to bed, I will pop some calcium & magnesium pills (500mg) one hour before I sleep. And of course, magnesium promotes calcium absorption.

For the women who always have menstrual cramp, calcium and magnesium helps to relieve muscle and menstrual cramps,too.

So that was how I managed to fulfill my 2008 resolution!

On MSN with my youngest cousin. He is 10 good years younger than me.

ME: Your birthday is coming soon right? What do you want for present? Give me 3 options…at least I won’t buy you something that you don’t like.

Cousin: I anything lah…The thing that I want is hard to get anyway..

ME: Really? Like what?? *Wah…this young punk challenged me*

Cousin: Shuffle pants.

ME: What on earth is that??

Cousin: Show you picture…

ME: Wow…where can you get this from man??

Cousin: It’s very expensive…about USD 120 each.

ME: WHAT??? *very ugly pants leh…* Ok..How about other things that you like?

Cousin: Mmm..nothing else. I am saving up to buy the pants. Going to get the reflector from my friend.

ME: Ohh..so you design your own shuffle pants.. *Man..and yet it costs a bomb for doing all the job.*

Melbourne shuffle I know..but SHUFFLE PANTS!!??

It is just the 9th day of 2009 and I am already showing sign of aging??

Just yesterday, I spotted at least 16 cafe au lait spots on both of my arms. I touched, pressed, squeezed and scratched them hard and they are still there! *Note: not advisable to do so because it may cause inflammation*

They are not bumps nor cysts, not itchy nor painful, just some horrible-looking brown spots all over my arms!!

I told myself that may be, it was some allergic reaction and they should be gone when I woke up, like ta-da!!! I’m beautiful again.

But no!!! They became darker this morning.

This afternoon, I complained to babe during lunch, and she said..

“Aiya..they are aging spots lah!! Like freckles…”

In total shock and denial…

“HUH??!!! HOW COULD IT BE?? They just appeared last night!!! Out of the blue!!”

“Aiya…you played golf last week right?? Must be the sun lah…HAHAHAHA!”

“NO!!! I did not go under the sun…”

“Then it’s age spots lah… very common what…”

*”May be she’s right. I have been going under the sun without sun block…all the golfing under scorching sun”*

Just as I thought thing couldn’t get any worse, my very dear fellow senior lecturer colleague whom I dearly addressed as “Uncle C***” said,“I am sure it is age spots. LOOK!! Like mine!!!”

Then he placed his arm next to mine and pointed his aged spots to me… “SEE! SAME!!”

I felt like the world has crumbled on me.

“Wait! I call Don..”

And of course, he wasn’t able to answer my call so I texted him.

Meanwhile, I called my mom. Thought may be she could tell me something comforting advise me.

And you know what she said??

“Aiya…..must be because you turned 26 and all the age spots decided to ‘pop’ at the same time…” Followed by hysterical laughters.

This kind of response is never well received, especially being the vulnerable self. But mom being mom, she asked me to think if I have taken any unusual food recently.

Minutes later, Don replied. “Hmm..let me take a look.”. Frankly, I thought that was the most comforting and hopeful statement that I have long to hear.

Somehow my “logical and rational mind didn’t analyse” the spots as age spots…not because I was in denial ok.

And of course when I finally met Don, he took a close look and concluded:”Nah…not age spots. It could be just a post-inflammatory xxxxxx”

I didn’t catch what he said after the “inflammatory” because that word has given me enough shock that my hearing became muffled.

“What INFLAMMATORY?? WHY?? HOW?? I didn’t do anything..!!”

“Could be due to insect bites and the reaction…Don’t worry, it should go away after 2 week..”

“AFTER 2 WEEKS!!?? SO LONG!! Man.. I am so ugly…*sob*”

I can’t recall any insect bite nor taking any unusual food nor medication. Perhaps I should just wait to see if they fade away after 2 weeks. 14 days and counting… I AM SERIOUSLY COUNTING!! ARGH!!
